Coca-Cola GB has royal portrait artists paint four independent shopkeepers
The ‘Local Royalty’ B2B campaign from MHP Group puts the owners of a chip shop, a pub, a café and a convenience store on show at the Saatchi Gallery.
Coca-Cola GB has asked four portrait painters who have each produced official portraits of royals to paint independent retailers and publicans who stock its drinks.
The B2B campaign, ‘Local Royalty’, goes well beyond the branded fridge the company has long supplied to corner shops, pubs and cafés. The finished works go on public display at London’s Saatchi Gallery from 28 October to 1 November, with entry free.
Pindy Kaur bought a fish and chip shop in Barnsley that was struggling in the 1990s and over more than 25 years has made Ocean Fish Bar a local favourite. She has long admired the late Queen, and her portrait is by Nicky Philipps, who painted Elizabeth II on two occasions.
Simon Dafforn-Jones, whom locals call Slugger, followed his father in running the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham in South Devon and has been in charge for almost 20 years. The pub hands young people in the area their first jobs and uses Devon produce throughout its menu. He was painted by Jamie Coreth, the artist behind the first official portrait of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Gino Verrecchia is in charge of Glasgow’s University Café, founded by his grandfather Pasquale in 1918. The café still makes gelato to a 100-year-old recipe and once served Anthony Bourdain battered haggis. Gareth Reid, who was portrait artist to King Charles III during his time as Prince of Wales, painted Verrecchia sitting in his booth wearing his familiar red shirt.
Since 2000, Kaual Patel has run Torridon Convenience Store, a shop in Catford in South East London, having taken over from his father, who bought it in 1984. Patel makes room on his shelves for any local producer. His portrait was painted by Nick Bashall, who holds the role of portrait painter to Princess Anne.
The four owners will keep their portraits, and each will also be able to choose a local charity to receive a donation.
MHP Group developed the campaign across MHP, Mischief and Studio La Plage. It is running across editorial, social and owned media.
