Editorial standards

We aim to be accurate, fair and clear about what we know and how we know it.

  • Accuracy. We check facts before we publish and attribute claims to the people or organisations who made them. Where something is alleged rather than established, we say so.
  • Fairness. Where a story makes a significant criticism of a person or business, we give them a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and we report that response.
  • Independence. Advertisers and sponsors have no say over our journalism. Paid-for content is always labelled as sponsored or as a partnership.
  • Privacy. We do not intrude into anyone’s private life without a clear public interest, and we do not identify private individuals in gossip items.
  • Sources. We protect confidential sources. Tips sent to us are read only by our editors.
  • How we produce our journalism. Some of our reporting is adapted, under licence, from partner publications, and we use AI tools to help produce it. Responsibility for everything we publish rests with us.

If you think we have fallen short of these standards, please tell us using our corrections and complaints procedure.
