This privacy policy explains how Digital Gossip (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects and uses personal data in connection with digitalgossip.co.uk (the “Site”). It is provided in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (“UK GDPR”) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Who we are
Digital Gossip is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. You can contact us about any matter relating to your personal data at privacy@digitalgossip.co.uk.
2. Personal data we collect and why
2.1 Tip-offs. If you send us a tip, we collect the information you choose to provide: the content of the tip, any company it concerns, any attachment, and, only if you supply them, your name and contact details. We use this information for the purpose of journalism. We do not record the IP address from which a tip is sent, and we remove embedded metadata from image attachments where our systems allow. Tips are stored privately and are accessible only to our editors.
2.2 Newsletter sign-ups. If you subscribe to a newsletter, we collect your email address and the newsletters you have chosen. We rely on your consent, which you may withdraw at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us.
2.3 Advertising and media-kit enquiries. If you contact us about advertising, sponsorship or recruitment, we collect your name, email address, company, role and the details of your enquiry. We use this to respond and, where relevant, to take steps at your request before entering into a contract, or otherwise in our legitimate interest in operating our business.
2.4 Correspondence. If you email us, we hold your message and contact details in order to deal with it.
2.5 Journalism and our company directory. Our articles, people-moves listings and company directory contain information about individuals in their professional capacity, such as names, job titles, employers and business email addresses. This information comes from public sources, from the companies concerned and from our own reporting. We process it for the purposes of journalism and in our legitimate interest in publishing a trade news service. Processing for journalistic purposes is subject to the exemption in Schedule 2, Part 5 of the Data Protection Act 2018 where we reasonably believe that publication is in the public interest. If you are listed in our directory and would like your details changed or removed, contact directory@digitalgossip.co.uk.
2.6 Technical data. When you visit the Site, our hosting provider’s servers automatically record technical information, including your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, in server logs. These logs are used to keep the Site secure and working, which is in our legitimate interest. We do not currently use analytics or advertising cookies; see our cookie policy.
3. Who we share personal data with
We do not sell personal data. We share it only with service providers who process it on our behalf and under our instructions, principally our website hosting provider, Hostinger, and, where we use one, our email newsletter provider. We may also disclose personal data where required to do so by law, or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. We will never disclose the identity of a confidential source unless compelled to do so by law.
4. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process personal data outside the United Kingdom. Where they do, we ensure that the transfer is covered by UK adequacy regulations or by appropriate safeguards, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
5. How long we keep personal data
- Tips and supporting material: for as long as they are relevant to our journalism, and reviewed at least once a year.
- Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe, after which we keep a suppression record so that you are not added again in error.
- Advertising enquiries and correspondence: up to two years after our last contact, or longer where we enter into a contract and are required to keep records.
- Server logs: in line with our hosting provider’s retention periods, generally no more than 90 days.
6. Your rights
Subject to certain exemptions, you have the right to request access to your personal data, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have data erased, to restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@digitalgossip.co.uk. We will respond within one month. Some rights are limited where data is processed for journalistic purposes.
If you are dissatisfied with how we have handled your personal data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, 0303 123 1113). We would, however, appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns first.
7. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including encrypted connections to the Site and restricted access to tips and enquiries.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be published on this page, with the date of the latest revision shown at the top.
